I’ve been tatting the sunflower bookmark from my book again lately. The result has been that I’ve been thinking more in the round and in weaving patterns. I wondered how easily it would work to interweave chains around a circle. This little medallion is the result of my experimenting.
The design uses only one shuttle to do the actual tatting, but I needed two shuttles in order to make it. On the last round, I pass the thread to the back side, and the only way to fit it through was to have the “ball” thread on another shuttle. The rest of the design is simple rings and chains.
This pattern is experienced beginner to intermediate level and uses two shuttles. I used size 30DMC Cebelia thread in white.

You will need:
|j||join||lj||lock join||lp||long picot|
Wind about 12 inches of thread onto a shuttle. Do not cut away from the ball.
R: (1ds lp) 8 times, 1ds, close
Tie a square knot the same distance from the ring as the length of one of the picots. This forms the ninth “picot” on this ring.
Ch: Count the square knot as the first ds on this chain. 7ds p 7ds, lj to second p from square knot
*Ch: 7ds p 7ds, lj to second p away from last lj*
Repeat around until you lj at the picot next to the square knot.
**Ch: 7ds p 7ds, lj to next free picot, pulling the picot in front of the chain above it.
Ch: 7ds p 7ds, lj to next free picot, pulling the picot behind the chain above it.**
Repeat between ** around until all picots are joined
Ch: 7ds p 7ds, cut and tie to picot with the square knot.
Because the chains on this round are interwoven, you will need to be able to pass the shuttles through the work. The second shuttle is never used for anything other than holding thread, but is necessary because it is small enough to pass through the work. A ball of thread won’t fit through the work.
Fill 1 shuttle then wind 2 yards of thread on a second shuttle without cutting the thread between shuttles. The full shuttle will substitute for a ball.
R: (2ds p) 3 times, 2ds j to p on any Ch of previous round, (2ds p) 3 times, 2ds, close, turn
***Ch: 10ds p (2ds p) 6 times, 10ds, turn
R: (2ds p) 3 times, 2ds skip one Ch on previous round and j to p on next Ch, (2ds p) 3 times, 2ds, close, turn***
Repeat between *** 3 more times for a total of 5 rings
+Ch: 10ds p (2ds p) 6 times, 10ds, turn
R: (2ds p) 3 times, 2ds j to p on next free Ch on the previous round, (2ds p) 3 times, 2ds, close, pass shuttles under the last Ch worked this round to the back of the work, turn+
Repeat between + around.
Ch: 10ds p (2ds p) 6 times, 10ds.
Cut and tie to first R, being sure to continue the weave.
