Tatted Snowflake

I figured since it’s January and cold here, it was time to make another snowflake pattern.

When I first drew this out, I figured it would be two rows, but after I thought about it for a while, I realized it was the perfect design for a mock picot.

A mock picot is formed by tying a knot a short distance away from your work with the shuttle and ball threads to form a loop. I’m sure when you stitch this pattern, you’ll get the idea.

This design is an experienced beginner level pattern because of the added beads, and requires one shuttle. I used white size 20 Flora thread.

You will need:

Size 20 thread in your choice of color.
1 tatting shuttle
108 size 11 seed beads

ds double stitch p picot
j join

Instructions:

String 108 seed beads onto your thread. Wind your tatting shuttle and fill it–I wound mine only half-way and regretted it. DO NOT cut the thread once you’re done winding. Count off five of the beads and push them to the ball end of the thread. Count off 50 beads (no more, no less) and wrap the remainder of the beads onto the shuttle.

Round 1

When wrapping the thread around your hand for the first ring, be sure the 50 beads are within the thread circle.

R: (3ds slide 10 beads down) 5 times, 3ds close.

Slide five beads down against the ring from the shuttle. Slide the five beads down from the ball and up to the ring. Turn.

Round 2

Ch: 12 ds, turn
*R: (2ds p) 7 times, 2ds, close, slide 4 beads down from the shuttle
R: 2ds p 2ds j to 6th p of previous R, (2ds p) 5 times, 2ds, close
R: 2ds j to last p of previous R, (2ds p) 6 times, 2ds, close
R: 2ds j to last p of previous R, (2ds p) 6 times, 2ds, close, slide 4 beads down from the shuttle
R: 2ds p 2ds j to 6th p of previous R, (2ds p) 5 times, 2ds, close, turn
Ch: 12ds j between the 5th and 6th beads on the next loop of Round 1, 12ds turn*
Repeat between * around, ending after the first 12ds of the last Ch.

Cut and tie.
