Tatting: Rose Heart

It's been a long time since I've done a heart pattern, and what better month than February?

This little heart pattern is done in just one round--there is no cutting and tying until you're done! When done with size 20 thread, it's about 2 inches (5 cm) across, and makes a really nice pin to wear. You could even hang a little crystal from the bottom of the rose to hang in the open spot below it.

Let me pass on what I learned about making the rose. I tell you to leave about 1/8" (3 mm) between the center ring and the first chain in this pattern. It's awkward, but pays dividends later. When I tatted the sample on this page, I didn't leave that space. You can see the problem it created at the top of the rose. One side of it appears smashed in. Leaving the open space before the chain should prevent this.

I have written the instructions for using two shuttles to accommodate the Josephine knot. It can be done with one shuttle and the shoelace trick, but I find that the tatting twists a bit when using the Josephine knot with the shoelace trick.

This pattern was tatted with size 20 Flora thread in Christmas red. It is beginner level and uses two shuttles, one if you use the shoelace trick.
