Part of the fun of designing is watching unexpected patterns develop.
I enjoyed how the second row of this pattern seemed to totally change the first row. Once the second row was added, it became not so easy to see that the first row had sets of two rings on the outside. I didn't really expect that.
Normally, if I can do a shoelace trick instead of using two tatting shuttles, I do it. I tried it with this pattern, and it just didn't work. I got totally confused about which direction I was going! So I used two shuttles instead.
Also, the tatting lays better when it is done with two shuttles, so it really is worth the bother.
This pattern is beginner level and uses two shuttles. I used size 30 DMC Cebelia thread in white.

Thread in your choice of color and size.
2 tatting shuttles
| ds | double stitch |
| p | picot |
Since this pattern uses two shuttles, you need to decide which shuttle is #1 and which is #2. The first part of each instruction will denote which shuttle is being used as the working shuttle. The working shuttle is the one in use while making the stitches.
Here's an example:
1: R: (3ds p) 7 times, 3ds, close
This means use shuttle 1 and make a ring consisting of 7 picots, each with 3 double-stitches between them.
Instructions:
See February's pattern for row 1
Row 2
1: R: (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds. Find one of the spots on row 1 where two rings are joined at the picots, not where the bases come together. Join to 4th picot on R on the right, 3ds j to 4th p of next ring, (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds, close. Do not turn.
1: Ch: 8ds, do not turn
2: R: (3ds p) 7 times, 3ds, close, turn
1: R: (3ds p) 7 times, 3ds, close, do not turn
2: Ch: 12ds p 12ds, do not turn
1: R: (3ds p) 7 times, 3ds, close, turn
2: R: (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds j to center p of adjacent R, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, close, turn
1: Ch: 8ds, do not turn
This completes the first repeat of the pattern.
*2: R: (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds, j to 4th p of next R on previous round, 3ds j to 4th p of next R on previous round, (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds, close, do not turn.
1: Ch: 8ds, do not turn
2: R: (3ds p) 7 times, 3ds, close, turn
1: R: (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds j to center p of adjacent R, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, close, do not turn
2: Ch: 12ds p 12ds, do not turn
1: R: (3ds p) 7 times, 3ds, close, turn
2: R: (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds j to center p of adjacent R, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, close, do not turn
1: Ch: 8ds, do not turn*
Repeat between * around. When stitching the last repeat, be sure to make the appropriate joins to the first repeat.
Cut and tie.
